Understanding Meta tags.
Meta tags are HTML tags that provide information about a webpage to search engines and website visitors (Moz, 2021). They are placed in the head section of a webpage's HTML code and are not visible to users. The most commonly used meta tags include the title tag, which provides the title of the webpage (Google, n.d.), and the meta description tag, which provides a brief summary of the webpage's content (Moz, 2021). Other important meta tags include the meta keywords tag, which lists keywords related to the webpage's content (Moz, 2021), and the meta robots tag, which tells search engines whether or not to index or follow the links on the webpage (Google, n.d.). Meta tags can help improve a webpage's search engine optimization (SEO) (Moz, 2021) and can also be used to provide social media preview when a page is shared (Moz, 2021).
