What is SEO and how is SEO used?

SEO stands for "search engine optimization." It is the process of optimizing a website or online content to improve its ranking in search engine results pages (SERPs) and increase its visibility to users (Search Engine Land, n.d.). SEO includes a variety of techniques, such as optimizing meta tags, content creation and keywords research, link building and technical SEO optimization, in order to make a website or webpage more attractive to search engines (Moz, 2021). The main goal of SEO is to increase the quantity and quality of organic traffic to a website or webpage from search engines.

There are two main types of SEO: On-page SEO and Off-page SEO

  • On-page SEO: It refers to the process of optimizing elements within a website or webpage in order to improve its ranking in SERPs (Moz, 2021). This includes optimizing meta tags, creating high-quality content and internal linking.
  • Off-page SEO: It refers to the process of optimizing elements outside of a website or webpage in order to improve its ranking in SERPs (Moz, 2021). This includes link building, social media promotion, and online reputation management.
